Weather And Seasons

Hokkaido

Hokkaido's four distinct seasons create a dramatic and beautiful annual cycle, marked by significant weather variations.

Winter in Hokkaido is renowned for its heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures. From December to March, the region transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting skiers and snowboarders from around the world. Temperatures can plummet well below freezing, and blizzards are common, particularly in the northern and inland areas.

Spring arrives later than in mainland Japan, typically from April to May. As the snow melts, the landscape awakens with vibrant colors. Though temperatures begin to rise, it can still be quite cool, especially in the evenings.

Summer in Hokkaido, from June to August, is relatively mild and comfortable compared to the humid summers of Honshu. The region experiences pleasant temperatures and lower humidity, making it a popular escape from the heat.

Autumn, from September to November, paints Hokkaido's forests in breathtaking hues of red, orange, and yellow. The crisp, cool air and clear skies make it an ideal time for hiking/cycling and exploring the natural beauty of the region. Temperatures gradually decrease, signaling the approach of winter.

Tohoku

The Tohoku region of Japan, located in the northeastern part of Honshu, also experiences four distinct seasons, each with its own unique weather patterns.

Winter (December to February) Tohoku winters are characterized by cold temperatures and significant snowfall, particularly along the Sea of Japan coast. While the Sea of Japan side experiences heavy snowfall, the Pacific side tends to have more sunny, dry days.

Spring (March to May) Spring brings a gradual warming trend, with temperatures rising as the season progresses. Cherry blossoms (sakura) bloom, attracting many visitors.

Summer (June to August) Tohoku summers are marked by a rainy season in June and July. Following the rainy season, temperatures rise, and the region experiences hot and humid weather.

Autumn (September to November) Autumn in Tohoku is known for its beautiful foliage, with vibrant colors painting the landscape. Temperatures gradually decrease, and the air becomes crisp and cool. October brings more stable sunny weather.
